What a muddle!

Today during Kikorangi's writing session Miss Bailey read us 'The Three Little Bears'.
She told it in a way that we've never heard before, it was all muddled up and made no sense at all!

We helped her to order the writing into beginning, middle and end and identified words that could help her to order the ideas more  logically next time.

We combined similar ideas into paragraphs and discussed what we should see in a good beginning, middle and end.

If you want to know more, pop in and see us on our writing road trip!

Games Morning

Last Friday Room 5 enjoyed a classroom reward - a games morning! The children were encouraged to bring along a board game or similar that could be played collaboratively with a group of people. There was one rule - no technology allowed! Surprisingly the children survived and had a fabulous time practising these skills.

A Maths Moment

Today Whakaute maths group started on our position and direction learning task. Look at us hard at work map-making!

ANZAC Writing

I was in the middle of the desert fighting for my life, wondering if I was going to make it out alive. I was in my bunker, loading my gun as bullets flew through the air. Ear pitching bombs were crashing into the ground and making craters in the earth. There were nervous messenger pigeons in the sky and horses on the field. There was blood everywhere and bodies all over the ground. It was a horrendous sight to see. My worst nightmare had come true. But I had no choice, I had to fight for my people. I got on my horse and rode off into battle. With my gun in my hand I started shooting, as a bullet hit my chest like a speeding jet plane. I fell off my horse, I was in so much pain. I lay down and closed my eyes as darkness came over me and I went forward into the light.
ADEN

World War One had started, I wondered if I would survive this nightmare. The enemy found our hiding place and began shooting at us. I raised my gun and started to fight. A bullet struck me in my arm and it stung like 100,000 bees all stinging me at once. I felt as though I would never make it through until tomorrow. Suddenly I saw a plane flying overhead and my body froze with fright as I saw it drop a load of bombs from the sky. I ran away, as fast as a cheetah and began shooting again. Blood was pouring down my arm. I heard men screaming as the bullets cut through their flesh. I saw dead bodies scattered across the ground. How many men will have to die before we win this war?
SOPHIE

I hear the breaking news that World War One has started, I grab my gun and gear and I volunteer to fight for our nation. I head to the Middle Eastern battlefield of Palestine and begin building trenches with my fellow soldiers when suddenly I hear the cracking and booming sound of gun shells. I quickly load my gun and start firing round after round into the air. Many soldiers and horses fall to their knees before my eyes. I feel like a nervous wreck, my heart is thumping like the gallop of 1,000 horses, the sweat from my hands makes my gun slippery to hold. I look up as a bullet comes zooming towards me and it strikes me hard in the arm. I twist and turn, rolling around the ground as the intense pain sends shocks through my body. I wonder when the war will finally end.
TOBY

I was on my way to fight in World War One, the war to end all wars. I was wearing a heavy green uniform and carrying a large missile launcher. I felt scared. My fellow soldiers and I boarded the boat and headed for war. I waited nervously for the command to attack, as it came I quickly got my missile launcher and started firing. I saw bomb shells flying towards me and exploding over my head. I lay still on the ground, camouflaged by the beds of Poppies. Once the enemy stopped firing we got ready to fire again. There were dead bodies scattered everywhere. At night we stayed inside the prison we called home. I wondered to myself ‘How much longer can I take this?’. After 3 years of fighting for freedom, the war was finally over.
MICAIAH

World War One has started, I wonder if it will come to me? But I know I will have to go to it. I was in my bunker and I reach for my gun and shoot. The bullets fly through the air like a burst of lightning. I heard the sound of people screaming as they get shot. Their blood is all over my body. “BANG!” I am shot and blood drips down my leg like a snake slithering in the jungle. I never thought I would survive this dreadful war, but I did. We won the war and claimed our victory. Lest we forget.
COLE

It was during World War One in 1914 when “BOOM!” the guns fire. I heard the horses galloping along, afraid of the guns setting off. The bullets were rolling out of the rifles and bombs hitting the ground. The leader woke us in the night and told us it was time to fight. Everyone was sweaty and shaking with fear. I thought I would die. I heard the bombs crackling like fireworks across the sky. I wondered if I would ever make it home.
JORDAN

I heard the branches snapping under my feet, people screaming as the guns start firing. People are dying. I feel scared that I will die too. I wonder if I have made the wrong decision, to go to war, but this is a fight for my country. For my family and our freedom. I shot and killed many people, the enemies. As war ended, my family came looking for me. But I did not return home from war. I lay in a patch of poppies.

The Egg Challenge

This week the middle hub have been working in pairs to complete the egg challenge.

To be successful in this challenge they have to be able to drop an egg from the top of the eagles nest without it cracking.

Have a look at what this clever pair came up with....

True Blue Kiwi Kids, Mate

One of our inquiry tasks was to translate a list of 'Kiwi-isms' (slang).

The Room 4 literacy group were then set the task of using these words in context, here's what they came up with.....

"I was walking down the road and I saw a funny looking bloke, he asked me where the dunny was"
William

"The bloke got so annoyed that he was stuck in the middle of the wop wops that he had a big hissyfit!"
Conner

"I was feeling hungry, so I went back to the bach for some brekkie, I wanted to buy some but I was too skint."
Toby

".....the hissyfit was so loud that the building came down, SMASH! Glass, brick and wood were everywhere, the road was cracked and people were screaming. That was the end of the bloke who got stuck on the dunny."
Ciara

"After I went to the dunny I had a squiz around the town, I was stuck in a place that was far out in the wop wops."
Sophie

"A bloke who was feeling crook came to ask me where the nearest dunny was. I said, 'You're in the wop wops but the closet dunny is around the corner on the left'. He said 'Good as gold mate!'"
Jake

"It was finally smoko time, I'm off to the dairy! I hope I'm not too skint!"
